Neami in NSW develops new health promotion program
Active8 aims to address weight gain and promote wellbeing

Neami in NSW has developed Active8, a new program that aims to address weight gain in people living with a mental illness.

Funded by the South West Sydney PHN, Active8 participants can choose to receive Peer Health Coaching, Eat Plant Learn or a combination of both. The NSW Health Promotion team were able to draw upon the two successful Neami programs – Peer Health Coaching and Eat Plant Learn – to support participants in addressing concerns about weight, with a view to losing weight and ongoing improvements to wellbeing.

Running for just over a month, the program is available to Neami consumers and other people experiencing mental illness within the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of NSW.

The Wollongong based team includes a Physical Health Project Officer and a part-time Peer Health Coach and has received nine referrals with some stretching out into rural communities in the area.
