Our BAWU activity centre is a hub of recovery and connection
Community, connection and growth at BAWU

Co-located with our Cairns Outreach service is the BAWU activity centre. Pronounced Bay-you, the centre offers Neami group programs such as Flourish, Optimal Health Program (OHP) and Eat Plant Learn.

For many years Queensland Health successfully ran BAWU, now, following Neami’s successful tender for the Cairns Recovery Program the centre is operated by Neami in partnership with Queensland Health.

The activity centre also offers Smoking Cessation support, a sensory modulation room and hosts a local Hearing Voices group.

BAWU also holds a Yarning Circle – a group that promotes social connection and emotional wellbeing. The centre provides an essential point of social connection for consumers and is a vibrant community in and of itself.

Residents of the Cairns Community Care Unit (CCU) are invited to attend groups at BAWU and participate in individual coaching sessions that compliment the work done in the groups. Consumers outside of the CCU are also referred to attend groups at BAWU.

The name BAWU comes from the local traditional land owners – the Yirrganydji People and means 'seed'.

BAWU recently held an Open Day on the 10th of October and Jeanette Singleton from the Yirrganydji People conducted a Welcome to Country.
